Futuristic frenzy at Geared Pro Junior

(Cronulla, NSW – Saturday, 3 April 2010): The inaugural Geared Pro Junior got off
to a cracking start in classic Easter conditions at North Cronulla today.

As the seventh stop on the prestigious ASP Australasian Pro Junior Series, the Geared Pro Junior saw the Australasian region’s best junior surfers battling it out
for $25,000 and precious Series ratings points.

With critical, futuristic surfing the order of the day, the first round of the boys division (round of 96) was completed in the one-metre conditions.

David Vlug (Narrabeen, NSW) dominated the day’s competition with a glimpse intothe future of competitive surfing. Unleashing a barrage of powerful turns,
combined with a mind-blowing aerial display,

David Vlug

Vlug claimed the highest single wave and total heat scores respectively. Joining
Vlug in the winner’s circle were Sam Lendrum (Nord’s Wharf, NSW), Cooper Chapman (North Narrabeen, NSW), Ryan Callinan (Merewether, NSW),

Coby Nau (Wonoona, NSW) and New Zealand’s Buck Woods who all progressed through to tomorrow’s round of 64. Lendrum, who is still suffering from the effects of an ankle injury, could not downplay the importance that the event plays for the rest of the ASP Australasian Series.

“This is a crucial time,” he offered. “All competitors know that from here on in all
results need to be excellent in order to be in the mix at the end of the year.”
Currently rated eighth, Lendrum is familiar with what Cronulla possesses. “It’s a tricky wave,” he admitted.

“But it has the potential to produce something special and from all indications the waves could really turn on this week.” On the local front, Jessie Horner (Cronulla, NSW) was the only Cronulla competitor to progress through the round of 96.

Also on display today were the RTA Slow Down Pledge ‘pods’ for people to take an oath against getting into a car with speeding drivers. David Campbell, Minister for Transport and Roads, was quick to encourage all drivers to ‘make a pledge’.

“We want young drivers to take the issue of speeding seriously because the consequences are very severe and real.” “These pods will be available throughout
the event and we encourage everyone to come down and take the pledge,” he stated.

Running in conjunction with Geared.com.au, an online magazine aimed at helping young people get their licence and become safe and competent drivers, The Geared Pro Junior continues to impress as conditions and swell improve with the initiation of the event’s topseeds into the fray.

Tomorrow will see the likes of Dean Bowen (Gerroa, NSW), ASP Australasian Series ratings leader Mitch Crews (Currumbin, NSW) and current ASP World
Junior Champion
Laura Enever (North Narrabeen, NSW) in action in front of anticipated big crowd. For all scores, LIVE vision, results, digital images, highlights and media please visit www.geared.com.au

Matt Lewis-Hewitt

International dominance at Geared Pro Junior

(Cronulla, NSW – Monday, 5 April 2010): It was an action-packed day three of the Geared Pro Junior as the international contingent shone brightest at Cronulla.

Greeted with an increase in swell and some great conditions, Australasia’s best
junior competitors were tested as board’s broke and a bevy of big scores were posted in front of a large, Easter Monday, crowd.

Seeing the likes of ISA World Junior champion Dean Bowen (Gerroa, NSW) and Jordin Watson (Currarong, NSW) falling in the round of 32, it was the international competitors who stole the spotlight.

Matt Lewis-Hewitt (New Zealand) was one such benefactor of the improved conditions, revelling at the break affectionately named “The Alley”.

“I’m looking for a big result to climb myself into the top five,” he stated after posting a total heat score of 12.00 (out of a possible 20).

“This wave is similar to my home break, so I feel quite confident in these punchy conditions.”

However, luck wasn’t always on his side as he broke his board mid-heat.

“I looked up and saw it bobbing around in-front of me,” he said with a smile.

Luckily for Lewis-Hewitt he used it to his advantage and continued his march to the next round.

“It can either be good or bad, I just focussed more on the scores I needed and tried
to remain as calm as possible. But, it can ratted you and be a massive
disadvantage.”

16-year-old Indonesian Oni Anwar was also in sparkling form, taking down the
prized scalp of Bowen.

Surfing in his first Australian based Pro Junior event, Onwar has exceeded his own expectations with his win today.

“I’m stoked,” he said.

“This is by far my best ever result and I’m happy to be surfing in Cronulla for the first time.”

Not to be outshone was the likes Garrett Parkes (Suffolk Parkes, NSW) who posted the highest heat score of the day with a blistering 14.50 (out of a possible 20).

Parkes, Jack Freestone (Coolangatta, NSW), Jake Sylvester (Bar Beach, NSW) and Davey Cathels (North Narrabeen,NSW) all marched through to the next round
of competition with tradesman like performances.

Running in conjunction with Geared.com.au, an online magazine aimed at helping young people get their licence and become safe and competent drivers, the RTA Slow Down Pledge ‘pods’ for people to take an oath against getting into a car with speeding drivers were on display in Dunningham Park.
