VETERAN
COWRIES CHARGER CHRIS HOMER CLAIMS THE CROWN
2010 Rip Curl King Of The Rock in memory of Mark Clifford & Marc Prpic
They
came from as near as 100m up the road and as far as The Canary Islands
but at the end of the day it was veteran Cowries charger, Chris Homer
who beat 2009 champ Matt Smith, in a final that went down to the
wire, to claim the crown in the "2010 Rip Curl King Of The Rock",
the contest held in memory of Mark Clifford and Marc Prpic.
Homer was on fire from the opening wave of his round one heat but
the question on everyone's lips was whether the 43 year old Warilla surfer
and shaper, riding one of his own creations, would have the staying power
to last the full five rounds in the very strong field made up of local
"Rock" specialists,

Nicl Squires
The
current Illawarra Open Champion Nick Squiers as well as a brace
of youthful, imports of the calibre of Werri's Matt Gale and Culburra's
talented Watson brothers.
The 4-6 foot southerly swell, coupled with shifting winds and a full range
of tide provided some excellent but tricky conditions throughout the day.
The famed, high-scoring "Rock" barrells , were present, but elusive
and unforgiving. As the tide dropped many surfers paid the ultimate price
of a trip to the reef for taking off a little too deep looking for that
extra couple of points from the judges.

Matt
Gale, with his impressive aerial attack, just pipped the power and
speed of Jordy Watson to take out the juniors while Culburra's
Louis Gillick surfed beyond his years to finish the highest placed
Cadet.
In the Masters it was Jason Kelly who got the Rock and nailed the
essence of the event in his acceptance speech by praising the respect
and fairness shown by all competitors in and out of the water on the day.

Matt Gale
The
presentation crowd was both moved and delighted when Meg Clifford,
Mark's mum, presented Chris Homer with his $1000 Rip Curl watch.
