www.waxheads.com red bull update 29 8 09 Ericson Makes a Comeback as Quarterfinalists decided at Red Bull Junior Surf Masters Final North Beach, Cronulla (Saturday August 29, 2009) When Ellis Ericson (Suffolk Park, NSW) woke up on Saturday morning he couldnt have been further from a place in this years Red Bull Junior Surf Masters Final but by lunchtime he had secured his place in the Quarterfinals. After being torched in yesterdays Trials, Ericson was one of five eliminated surfers recalled to compete in a surf-off to replace inured surfer Jack Freestones in the main event. When I got the call this morning I was already back in Manly but jumped at the chance to be back into the contest, Ericson said. I was reserve for the last event in Bondi and got in at the last minute and I ended up winning that one so these Red Bull events have definitely been a battle for me. Returning to Saturdays competition , Ericson surfed two grueling rounds of 70-minutes, keeping the pressure on his competitors as two sets of identical scores saw Ericson advance off his second highest scoring ride against both Davey Cathels (Sydney) (the pair posting identical 7.00) in Heat two and again against Chris Friend (Sunshine Coast) (the pair posting identical 7.75 rides) in heat four. It was a real battle out there today, I think were all at the same level and I dont think Ive ever been in such a close heat, Ericson said. These heats definitely take it out of you, Im exhausted now. Every time you finish a wave your legs are burning and then you have to paddle straight back out for another one.
Dane Atcheson (Copacabana, NSW) joined Tamaroa McComb (Burleigh Heads, Gold Coast) as the days top scorers. Atcheson posting an 8 and an 8.25 (both out of ten) to win Round three over Garret Parkes (Byron Bay, NSW) while McComb edged out Ty Watson (Currarong, NSW) posting an 8 and an 8.75 to advance into the Quarterfinals. Everyone in this competition can surf so its really about who gets the waves, Atcheson said. If you get the right wave anyone can get an 8, but it gets tiring surfing for a whole hour. Perth Standlick (Bondi, Sydney) could have kept surfing well beyond his 70 minute exchange, maintaining a smooth polished performance until the very last second Standlick earned the last of the Quarterfinal berths over David Vlug. I
havent been surfing much lately so an hour long heat keeps me excited,
Standlick said. Im stoked Im into the Quarterfinals,
its such a good event, theres a lot of money for winning so Ill
just try my best and see what happens. SPECIAL
