Crews and Mason reign supreme at the Geared Pro Junior

(Cronulla, NSW – Tuesday, 6 April 2010): Mitch Crews (Currumbin, QLD) and Arini Mason (NZL/Tugun, QLD) were today crowned the inagural champion’s at the Geared Pro Junior at Cronulla.

As the seventh stop on the prestigious ASP Australasian Pro Junior Series, today saw the curtain close on the Australasian region’s best junior surfers battle for $31,000 and precious Series ratings points.

But, after four days of mid-blowing performances, and great conditions, it was Crews and Mason who were left standing.

Continuing on from his amazing run of form, the unstoppable Crews once again was the king of the kids.

Defeating Chris Friend (Alexandra Headland, QLD) in an amazing final, Crews took out his third event of the 2010 ASP Australasian Pro Junior Series.

Accruing a total heat score of 15.25 (out of a possible 20) in the final, Crews was unable to describe his current dominance.

“I can’t believe it, “ an over the moon Crews stated.

“I’m not doing anything different, all I’m thinking about is surfing, having fun and trying to catch two waves (in each heat).”

Managing problems with arthritis he has found a successful strategy he is yet to put a finger on.

“My body feels good,” he said.

“I’m just trying to stay happy and it seems to be working.”

Taking home $6,000 and accruing 2500 precious ratings points, Crews found a suitable way to celebrate yesterday’s birthday.

“I couldn’t think of a better way to celebrate my birthday,” he admitted with a smile.

“This has been an amazing week at Cronulla,” Crews continued.

“We’ve all been waiting for a high profile event here, so I think on the back of this week it’ll hopefully be here to stay.”

Running in conjunction with geared.com.au an online magazine aimed at helping young people get their licence and become safe and competent drivers, the RTA Slow Down Pledge ‘pods’ for people to take an oath against getting into a car with speeding drivers were on display in Dunningham Park.

Taking home $1,800 and accruing 1500 ratings points was girls champion Mason.

En-route to the final, Mason was in white-hot form, defeating Felicity Palmateer (Perth, WA) in the decider.

Shooting to the top of the ratings, Mason was as equally dominant in the final, accruing a total heat score of 15.35 (out of a possible 20) to 6.20.

“I’m stoked with today’s result,” Mason stated.

“It was definitely testing conditions out there, but you just had to adjust as best you could.”

Racking up the highest single wave score, with a 9.50 (out of a possible 10), the highest heat total, with a 16.50 (out of a possible 20), and defeating current ASP Australasian Champion Laura Enever (North Narrabeen,NSW) in a one-sided semi-final affair, Mason was the standout of the event.

“I wasn’t really thinking about anything too much, other than doing my best,” she admitted humbly.

“The standard of surfing really high, so it forced all the girls to push each other has hard as possible.”
