Savill
savours success at Sandon Point
Another hugely successfull weekend
of surfing has stamped the Save Sandon Point Surfing Festival as Wollongong's
premier surfing event. Surf was highly competitive in the 3ft(1.5m) with
favourable conditions to complete competition on Sat and Sun.
Highlights included:
On Sat young Riely Killham from Stanwell Park (only 13 years old)
scored a 9.0 and surfed really well along with the other Stanwell Park
young crew including Angus Mackay (Brad's son). Riely picked
up a sponsorship from the events sunglass sponsor Carve Eyewear.
The opens section featured some super hot surfing.
Sunday saw finals day held in similar conditions with the standard of
surfing incredible, showing this area has some present and future champions
in the making.
In the opens Micheal Hopkins and Nik Squires, the number
1 and 2 seeds were eliminated in the semi finals in very close affairs.
The under 18's produced some great surfing with the results:
1st Phill Watt from Thirroul, 2nd Justin Arnold (Gerringong),
3rd Jack Hobbs (Sandon Point), 4th Coby Nau (Woonona).
The over 45's were surfed in a great spirit but was also highly competitive,
results were:
1st Andrew Johnson (Sandon Point), 2nd Keith Miller (Bulli)
who is the local lifegaurd, 3rd Steve Sugden (Wollongong), 4th
Wayne Tomkins (Bulli).
The under 15's were super keen for this event as there aren't many events
in the local area, the standard was very high and we really like to encourage
these youngsters. We are very greatfull for all our sponsors but in particular
Ocean & Earth who supplied over $3000 worth of prizes ensuring these
grommets went home with there arms full of prizes.
1st Zac Scott(Cronulla), 2nd Riki Tucker (Cullburra), 3rd
Nick Clifford (Kiama), 4th Troy Langerdon.
Over 35's was a great success story for 1st place Greg Macann after
his much publised family illness the 1983 Austalian open champion picked
off the better waves to produce some excellent surfing to beat locals
Mark Spooner and Jason Gava with Shellharbour's Mick
Mathesius 4th place. The final was surfed in the great spirit with
other competitors cheering as one another was taking off.
The opens were red hot from round 1 and to make the final you had to be
right on your game.
1st was Dan Savill from Woonona from local surfboard shaper Chad
Ryan 2nd, 3rd place went to last years champion Luke Nolan
with 4th place going to Sandon Point's Karl Lavis.
Karl was super stoked as he also picked up the best tube ride award for
his efforts in the semi final and was the lucky surfer picked out of the
barrell(pardon the pun) for the Indonesian boat trip aboard Surf Desert
Storm.
All surfers embraced the motto of "surfers caring for the environment"
A great event again this year with the usual thanks going to the sponsors
and organising commitee for putting on Wollongong's premier surfing event!!!
Thanks
Jason Gava
