Hoards
of locals showed their faces for the 2008 Werri Beach VQS event at Gerringong
on Saturday 15th November.
The day was welcomed by two to three foot conditions, humbled by light offshore
breeze and a spectacular turnout, making way for a fantastic day for all.
The
South Coasts finest flaunted their best surfing across the four
divisions; Groms, juniors,
Girls and Pro Am divisions. The Groms stole the show early in the day
proceedings with high
scoring rides being dropped like steaming hot potatoes, covered in thick,
luscious sour cream.
As the surfing continued throughout the day the infamous VQS activities
unfolded. The hoards of
grommets frothed like fresh cappuccinos as they were stoked out with thousands
of dollars worth
of giveaways care of Volcom, Electric, Vestal, West, Famous, Solrx sunscreen
and Red bull
The
waves continued to improve throughout the day. The finalists were decided
and the surfing had reached a level most accurately described as world
class. The south Coast had delivered the goods for the VQS event, showing
why they continue to produce some of the worlds best surfing talents.
The Finals kicked off by the Groms with JACK SCOTT leading the charge,
ousting fellow finalists
ZAC SCOTT, MICHAEL WRIGHT and NICK CLIFFORD who finished 2nd, 3rd and
4th respectively.
In The girls division, local hero KATHERIN TURK got the better of
SKYE BURGESS, FREYA PRUM and JESSICA RELF who all surfed impressively
all day.
The crowds flocked to the shore side as the junior finalists hit the water.
Bucket loads of spray
were heaved into the cool offshore air as the Juniors treated the Werri
Beach line up like a
Christmas turkey, carving it to pieces and serving warmed with mint sauce
and steamed veggies.
As the hooter sounded it was standout surfer DEAN BOWEN who got the nod
from the judges,
in second was another event standout MATT GALE closely followed by KURT
KIGGINS and in forth MAX ASHFORD.
The
security escorted the Pro Am finalists through the crowd to the waters
edge for the blue ribbon
and closing final of the day. The surfing was at a standard nothing short
of a 6 star WQS final,
with TY WATSON, TOM SALVESEN, BYRON BARTLETT and ASH KING all scoring
at a rate higher than the reserve banks recent increase on home loans.
At the end of the day, it was TY WATSON who took home the bacon, claiming
victory and a bag full of goodies in the VQS Pro am division final.
It was KURT KIGGINS who pulled off a phenomenal alley oop manoeuvre, innovating
his way to a
healthy $50 cash prize and a pair of new shades for the ELECTRIC HYPE
OF THE DAY award.
Congratulations to all finalists who will qualified to compete in the
Australian VQS final in April
next year and a chance to earn a spot in the 100,000 prize pool World
VQS Champs in California 2009.
Big thanks to everyone involved including the Werri beach locals, judges,
competitors and mums and dads for making the day a success.
The next event on the VQS calendar is this coming weekend at Avalon Beach
Sydney, Saturday 22nd November. Sign up 7am.
