SOUL SEARCH

By Michael O'Neill, Body & Soul Fitness Studio

AUSSIE legend and former world surfing champ Barton Lynch takes a few lucky kids each year on the adventure of their lives in the big waves of Hawaii’s North Shore. This year local groms Riley Killham and Kalani Ball showed Barton what they’re made of.

I caught up with Riley recently to ask him about fitness, faith, life in general and what it was like Surfing Hawaii’s monster waves.

B&S: Riley, first day ... scared? Where and how big?

RK: The first surf was at Sunset Point right out the front of Barton's house. It was only about 4 foot but a pretty powerful wave. I wasn’t too nervous, I just wanted to surf – I was pretty over sitting on the plane. He normally makes kids swim out to the back of Sunset through pretty big surf just to make sure they can swim, get used to the currents, see the ocean floor but we got lucky, we got straight into it.

B&S: So it got bigger after the first few days?

RK: The second to the fourth day we surfed Sunset Point again, Halieva and V Land. It got bigger each day. On about the sixth day it was about 12-15ft so we went to Waimea Bay. Barton gave me a 9”6’ single fin which paddled really fast but, at my weight, I was never going to be able to turn it much, especially with some speed.

I was pretty nervous ... we sat wide for about 20 minutes just to check it out. We didn’t want to rush in and do anything too crazy. When we did paddle in, I got into the first wave from the shoulder where it was a bit safer. I made the take off, rode it to the end, pulled off OK and breathed a sigh of relief.

Paddling back after that my nerves settled and I started to enjoy it more. I was taking off on bigger and bigger waves sitting deeper and deeper. I probably got about eight waves or so in the first session in about two hours. There were heaps of guys out, it was pretty packed, probably about 30 guys but it was pretty relaxed out there. When you’re with Barton, no one hassles you, in fact out there all the guys keep any eye on each other. Things can get pretty serious pretty quick.

The second session that day it was 12-20ft and I was packing it. I got a few waves and was starting to feel pretty good then had a massive wipe-out. It was like 15 foot, I nose-dived and got pumped. I was held down for about 20 seconds and I felt like "this is it". I just went floppy to save energy, because there’s no point fighting a wave that size.

After a while I grabbed my leggy (leg rope) and pulled myself up. The first gulp of air was awesome and I felt like I was alive again except there was another one ready to break on my head. Barton was on that second wave ... when he saw I was OK, I saw his face change and he started laughing. Everyone was looking out for us that day, which felt pretty cool. Everyone keeps an eye out for everyone.

B&S: I train you, I know you’re about as fit and strong as you can be. How did you feel in the water, how confident were you?

RK: I felt heaps fit. Other people were feeling the long paddle out but my fitness helped me through. I didn’t get sore at all and felt strong the whole time. We’ve been working on leg strength, core strength and my cardio and it really has made a big difference.

In big surf you have to put a lot of trust in your body and your lungs for sure. I was doing breath holding and stuff that we practiced for opening up my lungs and strengthening them. I feel way more confident in bigger, more powerful waves.

B&S: You’re pretty positive about your life. What can you attribute that to?

RK: Family, friends, where I live, staying fit and healthy plus I have strong faith in God which I try to allow to influence every part of my life.

B&S: What do you think surfing has added to your life?

RK: Surfing has given the opportunity to travel around places like Bali, Australia, Hawaii. It’s helped me to meet new people, make new friends and focus on living a healthy life. Health is a major part of my life and it enables me to do the things in my life that I love, like surfing.

B&S: There’s a lot of pressure on kids your age about work and what they should do when they leave school. What are your plans and what do you think defines a person?

RK: There’s heaps of pressure, it’s almost like you have to pick one thing and do it for the rest of your life, so you better not mess it up! Apart from pursuing my surfing goals, I’d like to join the navy and become a clearance diver. I don’t think what someone does defines them as a person, I think how they treat other people defines them. It’s about how your heart is set out towards other people.

B&S: Good answer mate. What would you like to say to young kids reading this?

RK: Go hard or go home. Take every opportunity you get in life and make the most of it.

SCARBOROUGH BOARDRIDERS Scarborough Boardriders cemented there number one dominance on the Illawarra South Coast by smashing Sandon Point at there home break.

The 30-10 was a great result. Special mention to Jackson Forbes, Rod Morgan, Luke Hazelgrove and Billie Melinz who each won their heats. Joel Wood, Brendan Coleman, Adam Wood and BD all recorded solid seconds in their heats.

The icing on the cake was the great win in the Surftag by our team of Kalani Ball, Tim Bilmon, Aaron Cahill, Chris Bye and Kane Organ. These guys were 11 points clear of the second placed team – that’s an average of over two points more per surfer!! It was this win that kicked Scarborough clear of Sandon – we had been level on points after the heats!

This win reinforces the fact that Scarborough are currently the strongest Boardriders club in our area. Well done guys!! Pete

Some info about one of our new sponsors Matt Jolley : Matt Jolley Builder was founded in 2002 and has grown from undertaking smaller contracts, such as pergolas and terraces, to taking on major projects such as new homes and major house renovations.
With a young, strong and friendly team, Matt Jolley Builder is committed to a high-quality build and personalised service to clients.
Matt considers himself lucky to have gained a broad depth of experience in the entire building profession. From day one he threw himself into the trade and from his enjoyment was able to apply considerable physical and intellectual effort.
Matt then worked for a couple of larger builders gaining experience in estimating, quoting, and project management, He then started his own company.
From that time, contracts have followed word of mouth and demand for his services continues to increase. Matt keeps his portfolio workable preferring to dedicate his effort and concentration on one project at a time.

The Environment and our Building Through his attention to detail and passion for developing his craft, Matt has accumulated the knowledge and ability to incorporate world leading environmental building technology throughout the entire project.
His dedication has led him to work on projects with Chris Reardon from the Institute for Sustainable Futures, UTS.
Chris is a national leader in environmental house construction and is the principal author of the federal government’s Your Home technical manual.

Matt and his team use the principles from the Your Home technical manual in the design, construction and renovation of homes to be comfortable, healthy and more environmentally sustainable.

Due to the large number of members now in the club (182 at last count!!!) we will have to make a few changes to the way our pointscores run.

PLEASE NOTE THE FOLLOWING

NEXT POINTSCORE IS THIS SUNDAY. Meet at the surf club at 7am for a 7.30am start. Check the reef as you come past if coming from South.

The cutoff time for sign on will be 8.30am sharp. If you can’t make it by then call and have someone sign you on. Any later than this and it is almost impossible for Dave to organise the heats.

· Surfers can only surf one division. The only exception will be U18’s who are also surfing A grade, 14’s also surfing 18’s and 12’s also surfing 14’s.

· B grade will surf one heat only. Final points at the end of the year will be determined by adding the placings achieved in heats over the course of the year (min. 8 comps). With 38 surfers signed up for B grade there would need to be over 3 hours of B grade heats/quarters/semis/finals alone. Those guys wishing to compete seriously see CDC about moving to A grade.

· Microgroms need to be there by 8am. This will allow the guys running micros to make a move to another location (if necessary) so heats can begin at 9am. This is (again) to cater for the large number of micrograms.

The committee has decided to make these changes to ensure everyone has an enjoyable day and we can finish a bit earlier (it was after 4pm last comp – that’s 9hrs of surfing!!).

Other notices

· Treachery trip approaches. See the attached booking form. Cost as per last year. Numbers are limited in “The Lodge” – first in with completed form and $ to Stu Montague will get preference. See Lord Mayor Mick S. for other details about Treachery.

· SURF VS TURF – come and support our guys as they strut their stuff against the Thirroul Butchers. FRIDAY MARCH 16TH at BEACHES. Word has it that Matt Stevens has already shaved, had a fake tan, and is doing 1000 sit ups a night. Great commitment Matt!!

· 30-10 Interclub comp will be on Sunday March 11th. Scarborough has a super strong team this year. Come along and support our boys against the old enemy Sandon, and Easties, Woonona and WABA.

· I have attached another membership form for those who stil;l haven’t joined this year.

Apologies about all the instructions – I sound like a bloody school teacher!!aaaggghhh.

PeteScarborough Boardriders Froths at the Park The November round of boardriders was moved to Stanwell Park Beach. The boys and girls had a hot rip bowl set up
straight out the front of the creek. Kalana Tom and crew put on a fine display of tube riddling
linking up the outside section with the inside gaining some high scoring waves.

The move to Stanwell was great as it gives the junior surfers much needed practice in varying conditions. Once again the mobile food trailer was a hot item with the frothing groms and thanks
to the local surfers for the use of their beach.
