Squires too Strong for Callinan as Steel Cities Clash at the Saltwater Wine Pro

(Old Bar, NSW – Tuesday, 16 November, 2010): It was a battle of the steel cities for the Saltwater Wine Pro open men’s title at the weekend with Newcastle’s Ryan Callinan (Merewether, NSW) going blow for blow with Wollongong’s Nick Squires at Wallabi Point.

Despite the tricky 0.5m wind-affected waves, Squires and Callinan rose above an impressive open men’s line up which included former ASP World Tour surfer Drew Courtney (Umina, NSW), Top 15 Pro Junior surfer Sam Lendrum, seasoned Forster competitor Joe Haddon and local defending event champion Luke Reading (Wallabi Point, NSW).

Despite a strong charge by Callinan, it was Squires who was too strong, overcoming Callinan with a dominant performance to win the title and take home the $1300.00 cash prize.

“I so happy with my win here today,” said Squires, “Ryan was in excellent form all weekend and given the small conditions he was going to be hard to beat.”

“Fortunately I was able to get the better waves and then maintain a lead through the final.”

Despite his loss in the Open Men’s division, Callinan was far from finished with the young goofy footer focusing his energy on the McDonalds Taree Junior division, where he went on to face Avoca’s Wade Carmichael in the final.

Showing experience beyond his years, Callinan managed the man-on-man, priority final very well to hold off the powerful Carmichael in an exciting final.

“I’m super pleased with my performance this weekend,” said Callinan, “to make the final of both divisions was a big shock especially considering the calibre of surfers in the Opens, so I’m really happy to have won the Juniors and place second in the Opens.”

“I can’t wait for bed though!” exclaimed Callinan, “I’m so tired after all those heats!”

Other standouts in the McDonalds Taree Junior division included Bar Beach’s Jake Sylvester and local duo Ryan Hunt (Wallabi Point) and Oscar Scanes (Old Bar) with Scanes winning the McDonalds Taree Junior Scholarship Award.

The JS Surfboards Airshow saw the future of surfing with competitors taking to the skies for a brand new JS Surfboard. Despite some good offerings from fellow competitors, it was Joe Haddon (Forster) who rose above the pack with a clean, full rotation air reverse to win the JS surfboard.

The Saltwater Wine Pro also saw the implementation of a unique competition format mirroring that of the ASP World Tour with a repercharge round and man-on-man, jet-ski assisted heats. The format proved both a success with competitors and spectators alike with surfers able to experiment more in their heats.

“The format was great,” commented Joe Haddon. “Having the second chance round takes the pressure off and the jet-ski assist is a luxury none of us are used to in regular events.”

“The new format has actually rekindled my desire to compete which is great!”

Event Organisers were pleased with how the new format was received.

“The format was really well received, with all feedback super positive,” said Contest Director Paul Worboys from Saltwater Wine. “We will definitely be using it next year!
