Baker
and McDonough Victorious at the Wahu Surfer Groms Comp at Newcastle
(Sunday
21th November, 2010): While its technically not yet summer,
the surfing action was hotter than ever in Newcastle today with the
third event of the nationwide Wahu Surfer Groms Comps series completed
today.
Clean
0.5m (2 foot) waves greeted competitors for day two at South Bar Beach,
with the regions micro groms stepping it up a gear
for some epic final battles.
The
under 15 boys division impressed all throughout the quarter
and semi finals and despite deteriorating conditions with the freshening
north east wind, this trend continued in the final.

Division
favourite Jackson Baker (Merewether) shot to an early lead
with a textbook display of surfing. However high drama ensued when
a shark was reportedly sighted closeby causing all competitors to
be pulled from the water by contest organisers.
With
the beach closed, competition was placed on hold while Surf Lifesavers
scoured the line-up on a rubber duck. Once the all-clear was given
by the Surf Lifesavers, the boys were back into it and it was Jacob
Hooker (Woonona) who used the break in action to his advantage
to snatch the lead from Baker.
Hooker
maintained his lead right through until the final two minutes when
Baker, who had shown patience beyond his years, stroked onto one of
the better waves of the heat. Bakers fluid style saw him obtain
the score he needed to reclaim the lead which he then consolidated
with a 5.83 in the final minute to take the title. Hooker placed second
with Jackson Starling (Avoca Beach) in third and Kieran
Conway in fourth.
Im
so happy with my win here today, said Baker. it
was a tough final especially with the shark citing which kinda psyched
me out.

Fortunately
I regained my focus and remained patient and I got the score I needed.
Baker,
a seasoned competitor by comparison to many of his rivals, particularly
likes the Wahu Surfer Groms Comps because of the focus on fun.
The
Wahu comps are so much fun with all the beach games and water activities
like the bodyboards and inflatable rings, I had a great weekend!
Meanwhile,
the Under 15 Girls saw Cali McDonough (Lennox Head) continue
her recent good run of form to win the crown from Kristen Thorne
(Noraville, NSW) who placed second.
The
Under 13 Boys was a very tightly fought affair but it was Merewethers
Luke Hamilton who shone above the pack winning from North Curl Curl
surfer Harley Ross-Webster in second, Luke Wrice (Coledale, NSW) in
third and Darcy Crump (Avalon, NSW) in fourth.
The
11 Boys Final was won by Sandon Whittaker (Avoca Beach, NSW),
with Mitchell Raymond (McMasters Beach, NSW) in second, Mikey
McDonough (Lennox Head, NSW) in third and Ed Aubrey (Curl Curl,
NSW) in fourth.

Meanwhile
the Under 11 Girls division was taken out by Lambton surfer Madison
Poole over Rylee Harvey (Belmont North) in second.
The
Under 9s Parent Assist Division was an awe inspiring affair with the
true micro-grommets of the event displaying surfing ability
beyond their years. Winning the title was Lennox Chell (Avoca Beach)
over Joel Vaughan (Bateau Bay, NSW) in second and Liam Askew (South-West
Rocks) in third.
The
Wahu Surfer Groms Comps are all about providing a fun, competitive
environment with a focus on introducing competitors to the structure
of a professionally run surfing contest.
The
Series now moves to the Northern Beaches of Sydney with event four
of the eight-event series kicking off on December 4.
The
Wahu Surfer Groms Comps are proudly supported by Surfing Australia
and its State branches (NSW, VIC, SA, WA and QLD)
