Winning WAHU Surfers Crowned in Cronulla
Perfect conditions for the perfect groms event as the WAHU Surfer Groms Comp wraps up in Cronulla showcasing Australia’s best grommets in event 5 of the popular National series.

After a huge swell hit Eleoura for the micro groms on day 1, todays drop in swell was welcomed and attacked with precision and confidence, producing crowd pleasing surfing across all of the eight divisions.

Standing out across the whole weekend was Avoca Beach grommet Sandon Whittaker who tore apart the waves with outstanding surfing for such a young age. It wasn’t just the waves where Sandon excelled, his participation in the WAHU beach games and sportsmanship pushed him into the spotlight.

Whittaker was up against Joel Wood (Stanwell Park), Max McGuigan (Chiffley) and Kurtis Vaughan (Bateau Bay) in the under 13 boys, the toughest division of the weekend with grommets demonstrating powerful moves right to the hooter.

Joel Wood was the one to shine taking first place, followed by Whittaker in second, McGuigan in third and Vaughan in fourth.

The youngest competitors were definitely the biggest crowd pleaser as dads jumped in the water with their kids for the parent assist under 9’s division. The frothing boys and girls took to the waves to show their big brothers and sisters how it was done.

Kiera Buckpitt (Culburra) competed for the first time after watching her brothers Beau and Ben compete for the last few years, big brother Beau gave her some tips on the shore but it was Summa Longbottom (Kiama) who came out on top.

Summa paddled out the back with her well known big wave surfing dad Dylan Longbottom and managed to ride the open faced waves with style beyond her years taking first place in the under 9 girls.

The premier division of the weekend – under 15 boys wrapped up the day, local boys Nathan Martin and Ben Dewhurst battled wave for wave with Maroubra surfer Monty Tait and Luke Soulos-Ramsay (Thirroul).

With situation changes throughout the 20 minute final, the title was in everyone’s grasp at one stage, wave scores of 7 and 8 points were dropping all over the score board but it was Tait who won closely followed by Dewhurst, Martin and Soulos-Ramsay.

Raising the bar for the girls contingent was Alyse Cooper (Manly) competing in the under 13 and under 15 divisions, the young grommet was frothing all weekend and the extra surfing paid off as she won the under 13s and placed 2nd in the under 15’s.

Paris Whittaker stole the show on her home turf in the under 15 girls in a very close final, just taking the lead over Alyse Cooper who challenged her to the last minute.

Winning bodyboards, cricket sets, mini footballs and frisbees was in reach of all the competitors as WAHU WILL and his fun zone got the kids firing in the sand. The crumbed cutlet and soccer skills was a hit but the WAHU wheel barrow race was the favourite with all the groms.

The all-grommet, family-orientated event is all about providing a fun, competitive environment with a focus on introducing competitors to the structure of a professionally run surfing contest
