Holiday With Purpose Nias and Hinako Islands
30 june - 11 July 2006

In 1985 my brother surfed at the famous Lagundri Bay right hand reef on the island of Nias off Sumatra Indonesia. Long regarded as the launch of exotic surf exploration, Lagundri Bay has been immortalized by surfers world wide. During a flat spell, my brother and his five friends got on a tiny local fishing boat to take them offshore to some islands that were supposed to get more swell. They shot some super 8 footage of some grinding barrels, both left and right. Ever since seeing that footage, I was determined one day to surf those waves.

Having hit ones mid 40's, traveling away on a surfing boat trip was a far off dream. Wife, kids, mortgage and a busy job meant that both time and money was lean. However, my wife (god bless the ground she walks on) had recognized the surfer man in me needed an outlet for adventure with some mates and recommended I take a surf trip!

I first heard of this `Holiday with Purpose' and the Indo Jiwa in 2005 via a friend and had unexpectedly met the founder, Channa Senerate, in Bali. His passion and vision inspired me about how a combination of surf boat trip and surf aid could work. "Someone has to give it a go, so it might as well be me!" I justified. It wasn't hard to recruit the guys from a previous trip to Raglan New Zealand where we scored epic waves and others put their hands up. People came and went over the months, some falling to family responsibilities and financial pressures and others being picked up as the word went out. We ended up with twelve. Not the dirty dozen, more like the domestic dozen! Most in our wrinkling 40's with kids, mortgages, receding hairlines and advancing tummies but all granted leave passes by the missus.
