Waxheads news update 23 7 07
Dakine Pro Junior presented by Smith Optics North Narrabeen Thursday 26th- Sunday 29th July 2007
Dakine Pro Junior set for great waves at Nth Narrabeen Mitch Coleborn keen to try and win Junior Series to make it 3 of past 4 Series wins for Sunny Coast surfers.
Australasias most exciting Pro Junior surfers are set to descend on Sydneys Northern Beaches for the Dakine Pro Junior presented by Smith Optics which will run on the classic world class North Narrabeen beachbreaks.
After seven events on the prestigious ASP Australasia Pro Junior Series another Sunshine Coast surfer in Mitch Coleborn has established a reasonable lead on the season ratings. The Dakine is the eighth of eleven events on this circuit and Coleborn is keen to maintain and even extend his present number one position.
Enjoying his winter at home recently in Maroochydore on the Sunshine Coast Coleborn said, Winning the series would be great as theres been numerous excellent surfers win this series over the past 14 years. Sunshine Coast surfers have been really stitching it up lately with Goodall last year and Leigh Sedley winning in 2004 so Id like to continue the form. Its also critical to place in the top four and qualify for the ASP World Junior Titles in January 2008 which also run at North Narrabeen. The ratings are always tight and a couple of slip ups can see you fall numerous places so for me theres a lot to surf for in the coming months.
Coleborn is a super powerful and stylish goofy foot surfer who is certain to be well suited to the Nth Narrabeen surf and hell be keen to see the epic swells that have been pounding this region over the past month continue for this event.
Dakine Pro Junior event director Adam Hennessey commented on the surf conditions saying Well its been possibly the best winter season in a decade and the Dakine could really score for surf. Narrabeen at its best will be the ideal arena for these surfers so were all hoping the swells maintain. These are some of the best juniors on the planet and everyone will be excited at the prospect of surfing one of the best waves in the world. These kids are the future of professional surfing and its going to be an amazing four days of surfing.
Owen Wright (South coast NSW)
Other surfers who will no doubt revel in the surf at North Narrabeen and are all highly placed on the ratings include Coffs Harbour pair Heath Joske (2nd) and Jayke Sharpe (5th), Gold Coasts Brendan Leckie (3rd), Sunshine Coasts Julian Wilson (6th) and Blake Wilson (7th), Central Coast NSW surfer Beau Achinson (Copacabana/4th) and finally a trio of talented South Coast NSW surfers in Parish Byrne (Wollongong/8th), Ashley King (10th/Culburra) and Owen Wright (Culburra/14th).
A win from any of these surfers and they are capable of winning the series and all are well positioned to qualify for the ASP World Junior Titles next January and will be focused on a strong finishing run to the season.
Local surfers Nick Riley (Fairlight/) and Alex Chacon (Avalon/) will be keen to do well in their home waters in their efforts to boost their ratings which, by their standards are modest at this stage of the season with Riley in 13th place and Chacon 18th. A semi final or better performance is almost essential for both as we head into the decisive stage of the year on the Pro Junior Circuit.
Another couple of locals certain to cause a serious stir at the Dakine will be the talented wildcards that have been awarded by the Northern Beaches Regional Surfing Association.
David Vlug gained his wildcard as the present regional junior champion and he is a great young surfer from North Narrabeen. The powerhouse natural-footer will not be overawed by the prospect of surfing against the top seeds and is very capable of causing an upset, particularly at his well known home break.
Vlug is confident of a good performance here saying Im really thankful for this opportunity and looking forward to taking on the best 20 year and under surfers at my break. I know the wave so well and for me it will be simply a case of surfing each heat and scoring big. I dont focus on who Im competing against at all. Score big and I should win, thats what counts!
The second wild card is Danny Sheather, last years regional junior champion from Dee Why. Sheather charges big waves and will really enjoy the power of Narrabeen.
Adding to what will be an awesome four days of surfing will be the DVS CADET CUP. The best 16 and under surfers in Australia and all well up there in world ratings at this age level including Dean Bowen (Sth Coast NSW) and Davey Cathels (Narrabeen) as the top seeds. A lot of interest will focus on the entry of local Nth Narrabeen surfer Laura Enever. Enever recently placed 2nd in the Under 16 World Girls surfing titles in Portugal. The pocket rocket has entered for practice but is a world class surfer who is capable of putting to the boys.
