Noodles Southside Regional Junior Surfing Titles goes off in style With competitors ranging from the under 14's, 16s and 18s, in both the female and male divisions, the action, in and out of the water, was of the highest order.
Max Ayshford (Matraville, NSW) was the standout, claiming the blue ribbon 18 years division ahead of junior superstars Sol Libesman (Bondi Beach, NSW), Jake Hunter (Bondi, NSW) and Brett Black (Matraville, NSW). Whilst in the girls division it was Phoebe Miley-Dyer (Bronte, NSW) who took the under 18 years title ahead of twin sister Olivia in a tightly contested affair - both securing their places at the Arnette NSW Junior Titles. But, without doubt, most eyes were on the likes of Lara Bingle, Erin McNaught and musician Xavier Rudd, who ripped it up in the perfect, one-metre conditions. Taking place in conjunction with the Fantastic Noodles Southside Regional Junior Surfing Titles, the Celebrity Drop In pitted some of the countrys most famed celebrities against each other. With Rudd, Bingle and former Miss Universe Australia, McNaught, joining Shannan Ponton (CH10s Biggest Loser), Renee Bargh (TV presenter, model) and Bruce Hopkins (CH10s Bondi Rescue) those that were on hand were treated to a show. Amidst it all, the standout was Rudd who showed his surfing prowess. I had such a great time today, he said after his 20 minute heat. An accomplished surfer, Rudd battles with a busy schedule and a hectic travelling program and is rarely afforded the chance to get in the water.
Lara Bingle, Erin McNaught There are times when I cant surf for up to three months at a time, but when Im at home I will surf every chance I get, Rudd admitted, showing his passion for the sport. Feeling a deep affinity with the ocean, Rudd is still constantly inspired by surfing and the ocean as a whole. Surfing has been such an integral part of my life for so long, it inspires my life and music so to get down here today in support of junior surfing is awesome.
Heading off to tour the globe next week to road test new material and a new band, Rudd is looking forward to throwing himself back into the van. Im heading out to North America next week with a new band and I cant wait to road-test some new tunes and hang out with the new band. In the other divisions, Jake Scott (Malabar, NSW) dominated the 16 years boys division, highlighted by a near perfect 9.75 (out of a possible 10) in the semi-final. Taking the final in style, Scott heralded his coming of age on the competitive scene.
In the junior girls divisions Tayla Ayshford (Matraville, NSW) took out the under 16 years, whilst Bronte Scott (Malabar, NSW) outclassed the field in the under 14s. Having recently announced the support of junior surfing throughout the state and the nation, the Fantastic Noodles Junior Regional Titles covers ten events in South Australia, Western Australia, Tasmania and Victoria, 14 regional junior surfing titles events in NSW, plus a South Australian Pro Junior event in July. special
