News - The Inaugural FOX Grom Shoot-out

After a fortnight of torrential rain, driving winds, horribly ugly humungous surf bought in by yet another 'East Coast Low' system things weren't looking all that flash for the timing of the inaugural Fox Grom Shoot-Out as part of the Lake Macquarie City Games for 2011. In fact, the timing couldn't have worked out better. Day 1 dawned to the first sunny day in 2 weeks. No clouds, no rain, the best possible wind (Westerly – straight offshore !) and a healthy 2.0m+ swell. The waves were insane !..........and not just for Day 1 but over the entire weekend, the sun kept blazing, the favourable winds kept blowing and the perfect waves just kept cranking, corduroy to the horizon.

The prospect of surfing 3 times before any elimination took off like the proverbial 'house on fire' with the field full (148 entrants) back in April and over 100 knocked back after we'd reached the 3 day, under this new format limit.

The brainchild of Club Member Mark Radford who along with his entire family worked tirelessly for a good 6 months leading up to the event to get it off the ground and maximise it's value and appeal to both sponsors and entrants alike. Well they came in droves with the 'double banking' system used on all 3 days to fit everything in in the shortened winter daylight hours.

Event major sponsor Fox could hardly fail to be impressed with the perfect weather, perfect waves and massive response and have already signed on for next year............bigger, better !! The kids were all smiles. They'll be back !
