www.waxheads.com 11 3 09 Great waves continued at Diggers beach for the final day of the Rip Curl GromSearch National Junior series, brought to you by Power Balance and Air Asia, as the countrys best junior surfers battled it out on the final day.
12 & Under division - Girls 1st - Holly-Sue Coffey (Crescent) 2nd - Kobie Enright (Tweed Heads) 3rd - Billie Melinz (Coalcliff) 4th - Alyssa Lock (Tweed Heads) The ever consistent Ellie-Jean Coffey (Crescent heads) was straight out of the blocks with an excellent 9.67 point ride out of 10, in the first minute of the girls 16 and under (16s) final. With a coveted invite to the Rip Curl GromSearch National final up for grabs she held off late challenges from Coolangattas Brodie Doyle, Kirsten Ogden (Suffolk Park) and local favourite Fiona Casey from South West Rocks. Coffey mentioned Its great to get a win here and have another chance at the GromSearch National final. The 16 and under boys was a much tighter contest with multiple lead changes throughout the all-important final. In a nail biting finish Cronulla surfer Zac Scott scored an impressive 8.17 points out of 10 with under a minute to go to take the lead back off Ryan Hunt (Wallabi Point) and secure the win. Noa Deane (Coolangatta) and local hope Mark Merrikin (Woolgoolga) were left needing good scores at the end of the heat to reel in the two leaders.
1st - Ellie-Jean Coffey (Crescent heads) 2nd - Kirsten Ogden (Suffolk Park) Zac was thrilled with his win and reiterated the importance of the National final Its my first GromSearch win in the 16s division and Im stoked to get a chance at the National Final, theres some great surfers in there so Ill just have to try my hardest and see what happens. The 14 and under divisions surfed in increasingly critical waves as the tide dropped and performances were lifted accordingly. Mirroring the top age divisions the Kalani Ball (Stanwell Park) and Kipp Caddy (Lake Tabourie) traded the lead until Ball locked in a 7.10 out of 10 on his last wave to seal the win. Brendan Hay (Copacabana) and Luke Hynd (Surfers Paradise, Qld) had swept all before them over the past 3 days but their luck deserted them in the final. Crescent Heads 12 year old sensation Holly-Sue Coffey competed in all 3 age divisions and ended up taking out the 14s and 12s final, making it a clean sweep for the Coffey girls, with sister Ellie-Jean winning the 16s. Kobie Enright placed second behind Holly in both the younger divisions and just couldnt find the right wave to challenge her good friend. Last heat of the day saw Zac Wightman from Lennox Head outlast Dexter Muskens (Kirra, Qld) to take out the 12s final with a high score of 7.00 out of 10 in the last 2 minutes.
