North Narrabeen Boardriders win Australia’s Top Pro Junior Club Teams Surf Title by taking the O’Neill Gromtag

Immediate Release: (Manly, NSW – Sunday, 21 December 2008): North Narrabeen Boardriders club have again dominated NSW’s top Boardriding clubs by winning the O’Neill Gromtag in excellent 1.5m (3 to 4ft) surf at Avalon Beach on the weekend.

As the defending champions North Narrabeen defeated the local Avalon beach club reasonably comfortably in the final with a final score of 79.3 to 71.8 with Ulludulla in 3rd place on 69.2 and Cronulla in 4th on 68.5.

The decisive surfer for North Narrabeen in the final was non other than their required under 16 surfer Cooper Chapman. The explosive youngster has had a huge month winning the Australian under 16 Junior Championships and he has capped the year off by playing a significant role in bringing home the trophy for his beloved club today. Chapman was the teams highest scoring surfer in the final with 20.5 points.

“It’s such a great feeling to surf for the club – just about every event we normally surf in it’s just for yourself but when you surf for the club, it’s a team thing and the pressure is greater to do it for your mates and the club and then when you win as we did today everyone’s just so stoked that it’s awesome” said a clearly excited Chapman after today’s win.

“We knew we were the defending champions and we also feel we are the strongest club in Australia with an incredible history of great surfers so it’s good to add to the history – the club really supports all the young guys so it’s good to be able to give something back!”

For their efforts today North Narrabeen collected $1200 along with a vmoto scooter valued at $3000 which is certain to get put to incredible use by the club!

North Narrabeen needed a little slice of luck to win today’s final and they called it up in their three team semi final where they were comprehensively thrashed by Ulladulla on an event high score of 105.9 to Nth Narra’s 69.7 which was just 1.1 ahead of Avoca Beach who were eliminated from the semi to place equal 5th overall with the other semi finalist 3rd placed team Eloura.

The O’Neill Gromtag is recognized as Australia’s most esteemed Pro Junior Club teams championship event with $3000 prize pool going to the finals teams making the O’Neill Gromtag a sort after title and an indication of where the future clusters of great Australian surfers are emerging from.
