Winners crowned at the Dominelli Ford Women's Surf Classic Presented By Rip Curl
CRONULLA/NSW; Sunday 30th October 2011

Surfers were greeted with another great day at North Cronulla Beach for Day 2 of the Dominelli Ford Women’s Surf Classic Presented by Rip Curl. The smaller conditions in the morning did not hamper the standard of surfing with high scores given throughout the day. As the girls continued building on yesterday’s great results so did the swell, with the finals being contested in slight onshore 2-3 foot waves.

The contest was hard fought with close heats being the order of the day. As the tide went out the action heated up for the semi finals. The Open Women’s Semi final had everyone on the edge of their seats, with a double riding interference for Skye Burgess (Lake Heights, NSW) and Freya Prumm (Batemans Bay, NSW) who were looking set to progress, allowing Ali Kelly (Avalon, NSW) to secure her place in the final with Freya missing out this time.

In the final it was Rachel Campbell (Stanwell Park, NSW) who snatched victory in the dying minutes from local surfer Kylie Jones (Cronulla, NSW) with Ali Kelly and Skye Burgess third and forth respectively. Skye Burgess went onto win in the Under 20’s Girls Division.

Sophia Bernard (Manly, NSW) dominated the Under 16’s Girls Division by winning all of the heats she surfed in over the weekend. Sophia carried this good form all the way to the final, claiming victory. In the Under 14 Girls it was Alysse Cooper (Allambie Heights, NSW) and in the Over 35’s it was Akemi Oleary (Cronulla, NSW) taking out the wins.

Erin Dark (Gerringong, NSW) was set to impress today, the current NSW Open Women's and under 18 Longboard champion, surfed with style and grace locking in the only 10 point ride of the event in the Open Women’s Longboard semi final. Erin followed this up with another stylish 8.17 ride in the final securing her the win.

The standard of the Stand Up Paddle Surfing had everyone on the beach talking, with Terrene Black (Long Jetty, NSW) taking out the win and the $250 cash from Cronulla Stand Up Paddle Board Shop.

The Open Women’s Bodyboard was won by Nicole Fleming (Kiama, NSW) with some nice spin to roll combos.

The Charles family from Cronulla put their stamp on the event making it a family affair, with mum Josie competing in the Open Women’s Longboard, and daughters April and Veronica competing in multiple divisions in both Longboard and Shortboard. April is currently the president of the Cronulla Girl’s Boardrider’s Club, which was well represented over the weekend. The girls were on hand to help out with the running of the event, and dad David was here to support them, doing a fantastic job as Beach Marshall.

“It’s a fantastic event,” said David, “All the girls are beaming, this event is for them, women’s surfing is growing and Cronulla has really embraced that, plus they’re having a great time getting armfuls of free goodies!”

The back half of the event created a real festival atmosphere with Dominelli’s new range of vehicles as well as every type of board on display from Jackson Surfboards, Cronulla Stand Up Paddleboard Shop and RB Shapes providing free board demos all day. The huge Moove milk bus was handing out freebies, Liana Raine’s Artisan gourmet pops were on offer and the Dominelli Ferdie Bird was giving out stickers and balloons.

With 85 competitors over the weekend the Dominelli Ford Women’s Surf Classic presented by Rip Curl looks set to remain Australia’s premier All Girls surfing event in the years to come.
