I
had been traveling through Europe,s atlantic coast line for about four
months finding some real quality point breaks and baccies.(back pack
hostels) I stopped in the Mundaka area for one month, Mundaka that super
long left hander in a river mouth in Spain was flat, for most of it
.I was surfing other beaches in the area that were picking up a lot
more swell.
Mundaka is a small town right on the west side of the Gernike river
mouth. The town is typical old european set up with small cobble stone
one way streets a couple of cozy pubs and small shops.
Mundaka needs a big swell for it to break. One day I grabbed a local
newspaper and the weather map was saying there was a low of Ireland
and the centre was 956! I sat at Mundaka for to days with howling 115klm
off shore winds and still no swell. Myself and Rachael found it hard
to sleep at night with the rocking of the campervan.
Then on the 3rd morning I woke up to hear what sounded like to men fighting.
I looked out of my camper window to see two Spanish surfers in their
wet suits hitting each other in the dark like wrestler warming up for
a fight,
Mundaka was pumping, offshore winds 6 to 8 foot and grinding down the
line like Kirra but back to front, so I ran back to my camper, woke
Rachael grabbed my 7 2"gun and ran straight back up the point.
The sun was just starting to rise and there was already a dozen guys
out. I jumped in the boat harbor and paddled around the moored boats
the water was about 12 degrees ice cream headache material. It was not
long and I was sitting in the line up with french and spanish surfers.
